It’s the link economy…

Like Jay Rosen, I didn’t know exactly what rickrolling was. Now that I do, I agree that “bad links drive out good” to paraphrase Gresham’s law.

The basic currency of blogs, Twitter, and even articles like this one remains the link. If you thought the links you followed here — or on any other part of this site — might take you to someone crooning about how they’re never gonna give you up, would you click on them? Nope. Even though the “cost” is small — you can hit the back button as soon as the YouTube title comes up — the price to the rickroller is high. To those who are rickrolled, their tormentor becomes briefly the electric fence between them and the net.
