I am old enough to remember when Nikita Khrushchev was head of the USSR, he brought the movie Tobacco Road to the USSR, believing that the Soviet people would see how terrible the conditions of the poor in the USA were, as depicted in the movie, and thus how dysfunctional capitalism is. The Soviets controlled the content of movies via censorship and didn’t understand that movies from the USA didn’t represent the views of the government. When the Soviet public saw that even the poorest families in the USA as dramatized in Tobacco Road, had REFRIGERATORS, the message they took from the film, was that being in poverty in the USA was better than most people had it in the USSR at that time.
