It’s been more than a year since I packed away my laptop computer, digital recorders, microphones, cables and cameras, and began covering Washington, D.C. with only my iPhone. When I first came to the top-rated all-news WTOP in 1997, the bag phone I carried weighed as much as a bowling ball. Reel-to-reel tape recorders (ask your parents) were the newsroom staple, but early versions of Cool Edit audio editing software signaled that the times, they were a-changin’.

A: Stroome has already been used by producers of the X-Games who used it to shoot UGC content in the parking lot outside the competition. The Friars Club Comedy Film Festival used it to solicit web films from aspiring comedians across the country. A group of students at Chicago Columbia College used the platform to document the recent the mayoral election in Chicago. The platform has also been used by dozens of sports enthusiasts, travel aficionados, bloggers and a more than a few civically minded journalists.

The U.S. imagines itself as the world’s leader in technology, and for good reason. American tech dominates many world markets. Yet just about every report that looks at where America is and where it is going sees this nation in decline or at risk of it. It’s a theme that has been picked up by President Barack Obama and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, who won a Nobel Prize in physics. Both have warned recently that the nation is facing a “Sputnik moment,” with a shrinking share of the world’s technology export market. This view also arises as the U.S. continues to lead the world in new tech directions, such as cloud computing. U.S. tech firms are building highly energy-efficient data centers at shopping-mall-size scales to serve global customers.

Here’s how it works: Advertisers or media companies register a StarStar code with Zoove — recent campaigns include **Suzuki, **GSCookies for the Girls Scouts and **GMA for Good Morning America — and when consumers dial, they get a text message with a link or voice recording. I dialed **GSCookies, started to listen to a recording and received a text message with a link to the App Store to download a cookie locator. Then I tried **Suzuki and got a link to a video, which I didn’t watch. Ad messaging aside, it worked! On the first try! Shouldn’t technology be this easy?
