News as a design challenge: New ideas for news’ future from MIT
Going out with a bang. I didn’t realize at the start of the semester, that this would be my last semester teaching full-time at Columbia College Chicago, but buyouts happen, and this one was right for me.
I did manage to connect with the creators of FOLD when it was still in beta and worked with them to get my students accounts before FOLD went public. The students created curated stories. One about the Cubs curse got picked up and noted by FOLD. Other students used the new tool for stories they wrote for my class, and for other classes.
We got to skype with FOLD’s Alexis Hope, who worked with Kevin Hu of the MIT Media Lab to make FOLD. It is a good addition to the students’ portfolios to have an example of new kind of story and to have been one of the first to work with that tool. Thanks to alexishope and to my students for a bang not a bust as I make my exit from Columbia.
